Connecting the dots on healthcare

by Hal Scherz,

March 12, 2013

By now, most people have concluded that the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA, Obamacare) does not reduce the cost of healthcare for the majority of Americans, and certainly does not protect them. Healthcare costs – both insurance and out of pocket expenses – have more than doubled for many and will continue to increase. What is difficult and confusing to most of us is attempting to understand how this all fits together and why.

Just a few months ago, the Obama administration had serious concerns regarding formation of state health insurance exchanges. This vital component of the ACA is necessary to move it forward, yet only 17 states agreed to build exchanges. The federal government pivoted and approached this problem from a different direction. They offered to pick up the tab on an expansion of Medicaid for 2 years, and then 90% thereafter… forever. That was enticing enough to persuade [….]

Spring Break, Sexual Predators, Cartels and Your Kids

by Chuck Norris,

March 12, 2013

A registered sex offender and convicted child rapist is being observed by South Carolina cops in the presumed deaths of two young women, including a New York teenager who disappeared while on spring break in Myrtle Beach nearly three years ago, Fox News just reported.

Each year, more than 1.5 million students go on spring break, spending $1 billion on their spring flings. According to a University of Wisconsin study, 75 percent of those college men and 43 percent of the women are daily intoxicated during that week. And 1 in 5 of those women and 3 in 4 of those men are on the hunt for sexual encounters.

But here’s the news flash: [….]

Steyn declares America ‘doomed’

by Jeff Poor,

dailycaller.com

March 11, 2013

On Rush Limbaugh’s radio show on Monday, National Review’s Mark Steyn explained why an incident involving a seven-year-old boy’s punishment and the subsequent reaction for chewing a Pop Tart in the shape of a gun is a sign the country is “doomed.”

Steyn, author of “After America: Get Ready for Armageddon,” compared this generation of children, who may have felt threatened by the so-called Pop Tart gun, to the American generation that stormed the beaches of Normandy.

“You’re doomed, America,” Steyn said. “You’re done for. No society can survive this level of stupidity. The school counselor is available to meet with any students who are traumatized by hearing reports of some guy four grades below them who nibbles a Pop Tart into a gun-like shape. I’ve never subscribed to this whole greatest generation thing, you know. But you look at those guys, they weren’t much older than the kids from the school. A lot of them were like 17, 18 years old. And they’re storming out of these transport ships in the churning waters of the English Channel and the North Sea, and they’re landing on the beaches of Normandy. And their getting out of these, and they are storming up the beaches and they’re taking German gunfire and all the rest.”

Steyn went on to say [….]

Considering a Departure in North Korea’s Strategy

by George Friedman,

STRATfor.com

March 12, 2013

On Jan. 29, I wrote a piece that described North Korea’s strategy as a combination of ferocious, weak and crazy. In the weeks since then, three events have exemplified each facet of that strategy. Pyongyang showed its ferocity Feb. 12, when it detonated a nuclear device underground. The country’s only significant ally, China, voted against Pyongyang in the U.N. Security Council on March 7, demonstrating North Korea’s weakness. Finally, Pyongyang announced it would suspend the armistice that ended the Korean War in 1953, implying that that war would resume and that U.S. cities would be turned into “seas of fire.” To me, that fulfills the crazy element.

My argument was that the three tenets — ferocity, weakness and insanity — form a coherent strategy. North Korea’s primary goal is regime preservation. Demonstrating ferocity — appearing to be close to being nuclear capable — makes other countries cautious. Weakness, such as being completely isolated from the world generally and from China particularly, prevents other countries from taking drastic action if they believe North Korea will soon fall. The pretense of insanity — threatening to attack the United States, for example — makes North Korea appear completely unpredictable, forcing everyone to be cautious. The three work together to limit the actions of other nations.

Untested Assumptions

So far, North Korea is acting well within the parameters of this strategy. It has detonated nuclear devices before. It has appeared [….]

10 Hollywood Celebrities

who should be blacklisted by Conservatives

John Hawkins,

townhall.com

March 13, 2013

One of the biggest problems that conservatives have in this country is that we’re far too willing to support people who mock, despise and hate us. They tell the world we’re awful people and then we turn right around and put money in their pockets and help them become bigger stars. Meanwhile, conservative celebrities are afraid to support Republican candidates or speak up for conservatism because they know the Left will unleash a tsunami of hysteria on them. In other words, there may be a lot more conservatives than there are liberals, but celebrities can get away with criticizing us, but not them. This dynamic is at the heart of why conservatives are losing the culture.

The good news is that there’s a simple way to start tilting the entertainment industry back towards the middle. When movie stars trash you and the people you believe in, blog it, facebook it and tweet it not just when it happens, but when their next movie or album comes out. Don’t buy their album. Don’t go see their movie in the theater and most importantly, LET PEOPLE KNOW WHY you’re not giving them your money. These celebrities and the big money behind them pay great attention to anything and everything that’s said about them. They also assume [….]

BREAKING: Dog Bites Man

….and Morsi Hates America

by Andrew McCarthy,

nationalreview.com

March 11, 2013

On the heels of Secretary of State John Kerry’s announcement of another quarter-billion dollars in U.S. taxpayer aid to Egypt, the Blaze has unearthed some more hair-raising video from the “apes and swine” archive of that country’s Islamic supremacist president, Mohamed Morsi.

This undated footage features a younger Morsi as an up-and-coming Muslim Brotherhood firebrand, railing at then-president Hosni Mubarak’s coziness with Israel and the United States. Morsi’s device of choice in the speech is the rhetorical question: He posits a series of them, the obvious answer to each being Mubarak, who is portrayed as selling out the Egyptians to Islam’s two mortal enemies:

Who has pushed the nation into the margins? Who has misled it? Who gave in to her enemies? Who tried to sell her in the slave market? Who did that?

And who extended his had to the Zionists? Who has claimed that he wants to make peace with [them] (in order) to keep their chair, to remain in his place? Who’s given [them] the chance to interfere in our business?

Who has brought the Americans here? Who has given [in] to them? Who is dealing with them? Who’s making deals with them, and works for them, and is pleased with crumbs on their tables?

Who’s the one that knows them, who goes to them, who hosts them? Who’s the one who knows their desires? Who knows their countries? Who knows their children? Who obeys them? Who wants to continue having relations with them?

The Obama administration has evidently convinced itself that  [….]

Dear Uncle Sam:

Get Well Soon, the End is Near

by John Ransom,

townhall.com

March 13, 2013

One of the most-widely watched indices of market sentiment, the Chicago Board of Options Exchange (CBOE) Volatility Index- also know as the VIX, (symbol: VIX)- while not exactly moving in uncharted territory, is moving at least in the rarefied air puffed by the central bankers of the world.

The VIX is now near record lows.

Being a contrary indicator, the VIX tends to move up as stocks move down and it moves down as stocks move up.

And stocks have been moving up- if you didn’t notice- thanks in large measure to loose money policies by the Federal Reserve that bring money to Wall Street, not Main Street.

“All is well,” the public bankers at the central banks around the world are saying to the private bankers on the Wall Streets around the world; even as the central banks distribute their Get-Well-Soon cards disguised as dollars, pounds, francs, lire and renminbi.

And, at least for now, you should believe them- that all really is well.

Or as well as free money can make a stock market, as opposed to, say, an economy.

And that’s one reason why we are seeing [….]
